Here’s a Quick Way to Repurpose a Milk Jug

Milk, It Does a Bird Good

Last week I was in Lakeshore Learning, a teacher supply educational store. A craft kit bird feeder caught my three-year-old’s eye. She was near melt-down-fever-pitch wanting this kit for $16.95. I was actually considering it, until I realized there was no crafting involved.

It was a wooden pre-made bird feeder for kids to paint. The only reason she left it behind was my promise to make our own bird feeder at home. With a quick search online, this super easy bird feeder craft came up..A LOT!

Home is What You Make of It

If you’re going for the barebones of a bird feeder, as we were, all you need is:

  • Gallon Milk Jug
  • 2 Twigs (or more for decorating)
  • Rocks, pinecones (optional for decorating)
  • Hanger or Wire
  • Scissors

Cut two squares around 3 inches each on the sides that are not connected to the handle. Punch two holes, one under a square opening and one opposite of it on the other side and insert a twig. You can do this again on the other side, so there are two perches for the birds.

Punch two holes near the cap and insert a hanger or wire. Hang, fill with birdseed and wait for your furry neighbors to stop by!

This project was a HUGE hit in our home. My three-year-old got the experience she was looking for..to actually make a bird feeder and pick twigs that they would perch on.

If you want to bling your bird feeder you can glue twigs, pinecones, and rocks to the outside, something we might do in a later project.

Have you ever made a bird feeder like this?
