How to Organize Socks: Part 3: Storage for A Buck!

NEAT AND TIDY

Welcome to the last and final installment in my series on organizing socks on the cheap! In the last two parts I talked about matching and than sorting. I wanted to wait for this last installment to make sure the system would work; and I can say it is working great!

The final step to organizing socks is STORING! The system won’t work unless there is an easy, quick storage solution. And no, throwing them in the drawer and forcing it shut is not the solution!

BET YOUR BOTTOM DOLLAR!

You didn’t think I would give you a solution that costs more than a dollar? I found these white nylon bags at the Dollar Tree. The package says it “stores plastic bags…hangs in a convenient location…can use throughout your home, kitchen, garage, LAUNDRY.” Hmm, that got me thinking.

They are small, easy to hang, and can fit light things in it, and best of all it’s a buck! For a dollar I was willing to try it out.

Why is it worth your money?

  • Throw in the socks from the top opening.
  • Frees up drawer space.
  • Cheap! (Worth trying for $1!)
  • Easy DIY if you want to personalize.
  • Money leftover to buy a cool hook…from the Dollar Tree!

ANYWAY YOU LIKE IT
Since I planned to hang it out in a visible spot; I wanted it to look a little less sterile than just white. I used RIT powdered dye and chalkboard labels. The results were better than expected! The colors were vibrant and colorful.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Dollar Tree calls them ‘Plastic Storage Dispensers,” I call them the Supah Dupah Sock Organizer! :) And since each kid has one style and color of sock, no trying to match! Just dump and done!

The kids love the new system. No more “MAMAAAA, WHERE ARE MY SOCKSSS!!” Even the youngest knows which is her color and will go get out her socks from the top.

Now if I could just figure out what to do with all.those.toys.

  1. What a great idea, and so clever to dye them. Your awesome, and the kids gotta love it! Have a great Weekend, Karren Oh! My Heartsie

  2. There's just me & my husband to worry about, but he *still* steals my socks. They don't even fit him, but my few pairs of black socks just wind up in his sock drawer!

  3. Its super idea..I really like the colors. Nice job.

  4. We have 6 kids and it seams that we are always searching for pairs of socks. We have a basket full of just socks. But hunting for matches for each person is a never ending problem. I like this idea of putting each person’s socks in an easy grab and go dispenser.

    • Thanks Melinda, also it helps SO much if they each have only one color and style of sock. You have 6 kids! Organization must be key! :)

  5. What an awesome and economical idea! LOVE IT!! Socks are just the worse to organize!

  6. My kids each have 2 different color socks white with gray bottoms and all black. There are also 2 different styles ankle for summer and the crew socks for winter. This is a very clever Idea! I could make one for each of my kids today with scrap material I have. It is so beyond easy to make one of the “plastic bag holders”. I made some 10 years ago that my family still uses. The ones they had in the stores were short, my parents have 5 kids so I wanted a long one. Take a piece of material 12″ wide by what ever length you want it to be. Fold the 12″ side in half inside out and straight stitch up one side. Take the bottom fold up with enough room to stitch is and feed a small piece of elastic through OR stitch it around a small hair band/pony tail ring. Stitch the top so the material won’t fray over time. Then with a good strong ribbon sew it on at the top across to make a loop which you will hang it from. Someone with fabric scraps laying around could make it for almost nothing :)
