52 Ways to be Happy for FREE: Try a New Food (Week 3)

avocado bread recipe

At the beginning of every week in 2013 I’ll be sharing a different way to get happy for FREE. Being happy doesn’t cost anything except your decision to try. I show you how I got happy that week and hope to inspire you to do the same. Join my Get Happy for FREE challenge, you have nothing to lose and a whole lot of smiles to gain!

Try a new food. It doesn’t have to be this avocado bread recipe. But, why not?
The more reading and researching I do, I find that happiness is directly tied to trying something new. Even research has shown that, “people who regularly engage in new experiences have more positive emotions than people who don’t.”
Many things we do this year to get happy will focus on new! Last week I challenged you to go somewhere new or out of the ordinary.
This week I am challenging you to make or try a new food!

If you never did you should. These things are fun and fun is good. -Dr. Seuss

This week we are going to try a new food.
It can be something baked, fried or even those chia seeds you’ve been eyeing! You don’t have to make it yourself, but it has to be something new.
Be happy knowing you are getting out of your comfort zone and having fun, for fun’s sake!
Here is how this week’s challenge went:
Week 3: Try a New Food

easy avocado bread recipe

I can and do eat avocados straight with a spoon. But, this is about trying something new! This recipe only calls for one medium avocado.

avocado bread recipe

Think banana bread but a bit green, and not using a banana.

It was sweet with a hint of the avocado flavor. I’m not sure anyone would know that it actually had avocado in it, if I didn’t tell them! I would totally make this again, it was so easy! This recipe was altered from this original: Avocanna Bread.

Avocado Bread

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup mashed avocado (1 medium)
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan.
  2. Combine all the dry ingredients and mix well.
  3. In a separate beat egg and avocado together. Add buttermilk and combine with dry ingredients.
  4. Pour into pan and bake for 45-50 minutes.
  5. Pierce with toothpick to check if it's done.

  1. I’m a bit iffy about this bread as I’m a picky eater in general. I think my husband would love it though!

  2. I’m pretty sure that my husband and I would love this bread! We aren’t eating any bread right now, but I’m bookmarking this for a “cheat day”. In the meantime, I’m going to tell him about this challenge and I’m pretty sure he will be excited. He is a former chef so this will be his chance to introduce me to another new creation!

  3. Wow, I never thought to make Avocado bread but I am going to have to give this a try.

  4. Looks yummy! I eat an avocado every day! The healthy fat is wonderful for you. I’ll have to give this a try with my gluten free flour.

  8. I just found your blog, and I totally agree with the idea that trying new things can help us be happier. Variety is the spice of life. I just tried a new food that was fantastic. In my city, food trucks downtown at lunch are booming right now. I’d been passing a Peruvian street food truck on my street for weeks and I finally decided to check it out. I got a roast pork sandwich – Pan con Chicharron, with roast pork, sweet potato slices and pickled onions – that I swear was one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had. It gave me a happy glow for the rest of the day and is now going into the regular lunchtime food rotation.

  9. Funny you should make Avocado bread because my personal challenge dealt with trying Avocado chocolate mousse! :-)

  10. I love your picture of the bread. I like avocados a lot, so this is kind of appealing! What did you eat the bread with?

I made fudgy brownies the other day, but didn’t snap a picture! I haven’t made vegan brownies before and they turned out so delicious! They didn’t last very long. :)

  17. This sounds like it’d be really good with banana (‘Avocanna’=avocado+banana, maybe?)… I’ve never been a huge avocado fan, but I hear such good things about them that I feel guilty about it! :-) maybe this would be a good way to incorporate them into my diet!

  24. I just bought a tagine from Cost Plus with my 49% off coupon ($11.08 with tax!) so I will be making Jamie Oliver’s beef tagine. It’s hard to get lamb where I am (you have to order it from a local farmer) so beef it is. Can’t wait!
